Toshiba Tecra R10

Saturday, July 26, 2014

The Toshiba Tecra R10 is an attractive 14.1" business notebook featuring the latest Intel processors and Nvidia Quadro NVS 150M wrapped inside an impressively thin shell. The Tecra R10 inherits its good looks from Toshibas Portege line of business notebooks, but are good looks and an impressive spec sheet enough to meet the demands of road warriors? Take a look and see what we have to say about this sleek laptop.

Our review unit of Toshiba Tecra R10 features the following configuration:

  • Intel Core 2 Duo P9300 Processor (2.26GHz, 6MB L2, 1066MHz FSB)
  • Microsoft Genuine Windows Vista Business (64-bit)
  • 14.1-inch WXGA LED backlit screen (1280 x 800)
  • 128MB NVIDIA Quadro NVS 150M graphics
  • 3GB DDR2 800MHz SDRAM
  • 160GB 7200RPM Toshiba 2.5" HDD
  • DVD-SuperMulti drive (+/-R double layer)
  • Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and Bluetooth V2.1 + EDR connectivity
  • 5100mAh Li-Ion Battery
  • 3-Year Standard Limited Warranty
  • Dimensions: 1.13" x 13.3" x 9.9"
  • Weight: 4.34lbs
  • MSRP: $1,549

Build and Design
The Toshiba Tecra R10 is a business notebook designed for corporate road warriors who want a thin and attractive laptop with enough power to get most jobs done. The Tecra line has been popular with large business clients for years, but Toshiba realized the need to improve the overall design and decided to borrow key elements from the ultraportable "Portege" series of notebooks. Does the R10 succeed in making the Tecra line more appealing? You bet.

The main body of the laptop is made of a plastic and aluminum outer shell that is scratch resistant but suffers from some flex around the palmrests. The base of the laptop feels very strong thanks to a metal substructure that provides additional support, so this laptop should survive many bumps and bruises in your backpack or car. There is an unfortunate amount of flex in the keyboard, but not enough to cause serious problems while typing. Overall, the R10 isnt rugged enough for you to stand on, but it should prove rugged enough for average use.

The outer shell of the screen casing is made of plastic with a metal support structure underneath. The laptop screen housing sufferes from a fair amount of flex, but pressing on the back of the display doesnt cause any screen ripples or distortion.

Display
The Tecra R10 comes equipped with a 14.1" anti-glare widescreen with 1280 x 800 resolution and LED backlighting. This certainly isnt the most impressive screen resolution on the market, but its more than enough for a 14-inch display. The most important thing to consider might be the fact that this screen has excellent readability under bright sunlight, so if youre a road warrior its easy to read the screen while youre on the road.

When viewing the screen from straight ahead, colors are rich and the contrast is excellent. Horizontal viewing angles are almost as impressive, but the vertical viewing angles from above and below arent quite as impressive.

Keyboard and Touchpad
The 85-key keyboard on the R10 is nice with matte silver keys that are clearly visible in low light. Each key has a good amount of feedback but the overall keyboard lacks enough support to prevent flex when you apply heavy typing pressure.

The layout of the keyboard is just slightly different than what you might find on most 14-inch notebooks due to the location of the quick launch keys. Toshiba includes three shortcut keys for power, the "Toshiba Assist" button, and a Windows Mobility Center button. Because these buttons are located on the left side of hte keyboard Toshiba had to make several keyboard keys smaller ... which can lead to a few typos if youre a touch typist who never looks at the keyboard.

The touchpad features the same silver finish used on the keyboard and held up well during our tests. The touchpad in our review unit is an Alps touchpad, but unlike most Alps touchpads weve reviewed this touchpad was quite responsive and free from any cursor lag issues. The only negative issues we had with the touchpad were the relatively small size of the touchpad and the fact that the touchpad buttons are a little painful to use. The polished silver touchpad buttons have extremely shallow presses so if you tend to press hard with your thumb you will end up with a sore thumb by the end of an 8-hour work day. Also, since the fingerprint reader is located between the touchpad buttons its easy to accidentally trigger the fingerprint reader with your thumb and get an error message on the screen ... if the fingerprint reader is active.

Speakers
The built-in stereo speakers produce average quality sound for a 14-inch notebook with a good range of highs, middles, but virtually no bass. The overall sound quality is a little tinny, but not bad for a business notebook. The highest volume settings are more than loud enough to fill an office with sound for a presentation, but are still clear and not distorted.

The headphone jack on the left side of the R10 works well with the two different brands of earphones I used during the test. No static or other noise was noticed through the jack besides imperfections in the audio source itself. I also appreciated the physical volume wheel on the notebook which made it quick and easy to adjust volume levels.

Performance and Benchmarks
Our review unit of the Tecra R10 came with the Intel P9300 processor, clocking in at 2.26GHz, and jammed packed with 6MB of cache. For graphics, Toshiba included an Nvidia Quadro NVS 150M series video card with 128MB of GDDR3 memory. A fast 160GB 7200 RPM hard drive was also included, which helped applications load without much lag. This entry-level business laptop didnt exceed our expectations, but it certainly has more than enough computing power to handle average business tasks like working in Microsoft Office, editing photos in Adobe Photoshop, or navigating the web.

With that said, lets jump into the performance benchmarks.

Ports and Features
The Tecra R10 features a good number of ports on all sides, so let us take a brief tour ...

Left side:

Here we see the VGA out, security lock slot, combo USB/eSATA port, USB port, microphone and headphone jacks, as well as the physical volume dial.

Right side:

Optical drive, ExpressCard slot, wireless on/off, USB, Ethernet, and power jack.

Rear side:

The battery and hinges.

Front side:

The only port on the front side is the SD card reader located in the middle of the notebook.

The R10 also features an 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi card and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, both of which always worked without any dropped signals.

If there is any problem with the port layout, its the location of the ExpressCard slot. As shown in the image below, if you insert a typical ExpressCard device into the slot it will block the optical drive ... preventing you from inserting or ejecting DVDs.

Heat and Noise
During normal use (browsing the web or working on a text document) the Tecra R10 remained nice and quiet. Even after watching some streaming video online and after stressing the graphics the cooling fan inside the laptop barely gets loud enough to hear.

Finally, we recorded the following external temperatures using an IR thermometer after running two consecutive PCMark05 benchmarks. This should serve as an indicator of how hot the notebook will get after about 30 minutes of serious use. All temperatures are listed in degrees Fahrenheit. While the R10 isnt the coldest notebook weve reviewed, it does stay amazing cool considering the reasonably powerful processor and graphics.

Battery
The battery life is something we always want to pay close attention to when looking at business notebooks, and the Tecra R10 failed to impress in this area. During our timed tests, the laptop was set up for the "balanced" power profile, screen brightness at about 70%, WiFi on, and accessing the hard drive while listening to music files and editing documents in Microsoft Office. The laptop shut down after exactly 2 hours and 52 minutes with 3% of the battery left, which is acceptable for light use, but not particularly impressive. Battery life can also be extended via using the "power saver" power profile in Vista, or with a secondary battery.

Conclusion
The Toshiba Tecra R10 is the best looking, best performing Tecra notebook weve seen in years. The Tecra line of notebooks often lacked the polish of the rest of Toshibas laptops, but thanks to some design elements from the Toshiba Portege line, the new Tecra notebooks look as good as they perform. Still, the attractive R10 is not without its flaws.

Designers seemingly had some trouble figuring out where to put things in this notebook since the ExpressCard slot, fingerprint reader, and quick launch keys all should have been located elsewhere. The touchpad buttons work great, but the shallow press of the buttons makes them somewhat painful to use over the course of a full work day. Still, the main issue that may keep some people from buying the Tecra R10 is the price. While the price of the R10 isnt completely out of line, similar configurations from other companies cost several hundred dollars less.

Bottom line, the Toshiba Tecra R10 is a great business notebook for road warriors who want a full featured notebook with sleek looks ... but it would be even better if it was a few hundred dollars less expensive.

Pros:

  • Excellent configuration with plenty of performance and storage
  • Fantastic sunlight-readable screen
  • Attractive and sleek design
  • All the ports and connections you need for business

Cons:

  • More expensive than some of the competition
  • Horrible location of the ExpressCard slot (blocks optical drive)
  • Subpar battery life
  • Strange location of quick launch keys results in some small keyboard keys
  • Uncomfortable touchpad buttons
  • Poor placement of fingerprint reader

Remove Smartware Drive Western Digital WD External Hard Drive

Thursday, July 17, 2014

You have bought a Western Digital external hard drive and every time you plug it in a window pops up and asks if you want to install the automatic backup software.

Now, this is jargon for Western Digital will now put a virtual drive on your computer to automatically backup your files. The problem is no one can understand how it works or how to restore the files to your computer when you want to. Dont waste your time trying to contact Western Digital - they wont respond!

There are two ways around this.

I. Disable the drive so it doesnt show in Windows Explorer or any other file program you have.
  1. Go to "Control". Select "Classic View" in the left panel. Click "System". "Hardware", then "Device Manager".
  2. Click the cross to the left of "DVD/CD ROM Drives".
  3. You will see "WD Virtual CD 1110 USB Device" or similar with a different number depending on the drive you have.
  4. Right click this. Select "Disable" from the list then right click this also. Close all the windows you have open and reboot.

VoilĂ ! The virtual drive is not visible any more.

II. Uninstall the Smartware virtual drive.
Select "Uninstall" from the list then right click this also. Close all the windows you have open and reboot.

The files that you have manually installed on the Western Digital external drive will still be there.

Warning! Do not reformat the external drive. You will lose storage space.

An example of this a 160 GB WD external hard drive. The Western Digital virtual drive takes up 0.650 GB, leaving 159.350 GB of usable space. If you reformat it you will only have 148 GB on the whole external drive. There is an anomaly here but I am not sure what it is. You dont gain any more storage memory by hiding the virtual drive or uninstalling it. Perhaps hiding it is enough. At least you dont see it any more.

A little advice - use Paragon Backup software to store an image of your computer after a fresh Windows install when you have put your main programs on and set everything up as you want. Then in the future when your computer slows down, gets a stubborn virus you cant remove or will not System Restore any more, you can make a fresh start as you want it to be.

How to Mount an ISO on a Virtual CD DVD ROM

Wednesday, July 16, 2014

A virtual device is a false piece of hardware in which it tricks your computer into thinking a piece of hardware exists when it doesnt. In this particular case we are talking about a virtual CD/DVD rom. You install a software and your computer thinks you just added a new CD/DVD ROM to your computer. In this guide we go over how to mount an ISO or other disk image onto a virtual CD/DVD ROM.

Instructions

Things Youll Need:

  • Computer
  • Internet
  • Daemon Tools
  • ISO
  1. Step 1

    Before you can even begin you need to install the Virtual Device or Virtual CD/DVD ROM onto your computer. There are several different types available but the most flexible is Daemon Tool. Daemon Tools will install a single Virtual CD/DVD ROM onto your computer.

  2. Step 2

    After you have installed and up your Virtual CD/DVD ROM you will need to get a hold of an ISO or other image file. Once it is loaded you will see a small icon on your task bar, near your system clock. It will look like a silver circle with a lightning bolt through it.

  3. Step 3
    Virtual Device Daemon Tools ISO Mount
    Virtual Device Daemon Tools ISO Mount

    Click the Daemon Tools icon and a list will come up, you should click on Device 0 [Z]:No Media. The letter inside the [ and ] will vary and depend a lot on your computer settings. Once you click that you can browse to your ISO or other image file, this will mount the ISO file on the Daemon tools virtual CD/DVD ROM.

  4. Step 4
    ISO Virtual Device Daemon Tools CD ROM
    ISO Virtual Device Daemon Tools CD ROM

    After you have loaded the ISO or image the program you are trying to load should automatically run. If it doesnt you can simply navigate to the virtual CD/DVD ROM device through My Computer and double click the virtual CD/DVD ROM device to browse the ISO or image. It should take on the name and icon of the ISO you are loading. In the picture example I used an ISO labeled Stef2_disk1.

How to Write a File to Email by PHP

Tuesday, July 15, 2014

The contents of a file can be place sent in an email by using the "fread" and "mail" functions. The "fread" function is used to place the contents of the file into a variable. The file must be first opened using the "fopen" function and it should be closed using the "fclose" function. The script must also have variables for the sender address, the recipient address and the subject line for the email. These variables are used to create the headers that are sent, along with the contents of the document, using the "mail" function.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Open blank document in your preferred text editor.

  2. Step 2

    Type "

  3. Step 3

    Type the following four lines to place the contents of the file in the "$data" variable:
    $file="test.txt";
    $fh=fopen($file,r);
    $data=fread($fh, filesize($file));
    fclose($fh);

  4. Step 4

    Type the following two lines to set up the sender and recipient email addresses:
    $to_address="recipient@example.com";
    $from_address="sender@example.com";

  5. Step 5

    Type the line "$subject="File Contents";" to create the subject of the email.

  6. Step 6

    Type the following three lines to set up the email headers:
    $headers = From: .$from_address."
    ".
    Reply-To: .$from_address."
    " .
    X-Mailer: PHP/ . phpversion();

  7. Step 7

    Type the line "mail($to_address, $subject, $data, $headers);" to send the email containing the contents of the file.

  8. Step 8

    Type "?>" to close the PHP script.

  9. Step 9

    Save the script with the ".php" file extension.

How To Enable Hibernate Option In Windows 7

Monday, July 14, 2014

In Windows XP enabling Hibernate option was a very easy task, but we have to follow a different approach to do the same job in Vista and Windows 7.

If you are not aware of Hibernate feature, Hibernation is a power-saving state designed primarily for laptops. While sleep puts your work and settings in memory and draws a small amount of power, hibernation puts your open documents and programs on your hard disk and then turns off your computer. Of all the power-saving states in Windows, hibernation uses the least amount of power. On a laptop, use hibernation when you know that you won’t use your laptop for an extended period and won’t have an opportunity to charge the battery during that time.

Hibernate option in windows 7

So if you are really going to use this feature then you need to enable it by doing a simple procedure as mentioned below:

1. Open Command Prompt with Administrator rights. To open Command Prompt, type CMD in Start menu and then hit Ctrl + Shift + Enter to open the Command Prompt with Admin rights.

2. Next, type the below command and hit enter:

powercfg /hibernate on

Hibernate command

3. Type exit and hit enter to close the Command Prompt.

4. If you can’t see the Hibernate option in Start menu then do the following tasks:

A. Type Power Options in Start menu and hit enter.

B. In the left pane, open the link labeled “Change when the computer sleeps” and then open the link “Change advanced power settings”.

C. Under the Advanced Sleep options, expand the Sleep tree and turn off Hybrid Sleep.

D. Now go back to Start menu to see the new Hibernate entry.

How to create the program Hello World using a java program

Sunday, July 13, 2014

The first program generally created in any first year Computer Science class. With this quick article, youll be able to make the HelloWorld program.

Instructions

Things Youll Need:

  • Computer, Java Program(Netbeans, etc.), Desire to being programming in Java
  1. Step 1

    You have to open the java programming program(Netbean, etc). Create a new java program. This is most likely done by going to the menu and clicking on the file. After creating it, if you are asked to name it, name it Hello World.

  2. Step 2

    You will then put in the following code:
    public class HelloWorld {

    public static void main(String[] args) {
    System.out.println("Hello World");
    }
    }

  3. Step 3

    Once the code is correctly inserted, all you will have to do is run the program. In the console, the text you have within the quotation marks should be displayed.

  4. Step 4

    To further your Java programming, I suggest taking classes at a local college. These are great places to learn Java and meet people who have the same desire as you. A secondary suggestion would be to buy a book or two on Java. Make sure they are around your level of programming. Read and then put what you learn to use.

Airtel 3G 2G GPRS Hack Updated

Wednesday, July 9, 2014

We are back once again with a new working 3G and 2G trick for airtel, it is working for march - april, this time, it is a proxy trick.
Our previous trick is now blocked in almost all the areas including haryana, Up and other states but this is latest trick, this post has been scheduled to be posted on 20 March, due to security reasons, we had discovered trick very much before, but dont shared it as it may be blocked. So today it is 20 March, Lets see its features:-
  1. Working on Zero Balance :- As other tricks, this trick is working at 0 (NULL) balance, you can get it at higher balance, but try at lowest risk. It doesnt deduct balance, however it is better to try it at lowest risk
  2. No speed Capping issue :- Airtel is always in discussion due to their speed capping issue, however, this time solution is very easy, just by activating 0 rental plan. Some users mailed me asking, they got 50 MB error, here is the reason. Solution is simple, just activate any 3G pack first, after validity ends, you can activate 0 rental plan too.
  3. Proxy trick:- As it is proxy trick, you dont need to install any additional software or tap drivers or anything else Just configure it and enjoy.
  4. Downloading supported :- This trick also support downloading and parallel downloading.
  5. No sim block issue:- It will not block your sim, if you disconnect it after every 50 -60 MB. It will never block your sim, if you do follow this method.

Configuration:-

Mobile:-

Setup the following configuration in mobile:-
Connection Name:- computertutorials.tk or bestcomputertutorials.blogspot.com
APN :- airtelgprs.com

What is the best and easy computer language to learn and where can i find tutorial for the language

Tuesday, July 8, 2014

its should be easy and good cuz i am 14 and i need a computer language to design software and stuff:DWhat is the best and easy computer language to learn and where can i find tutorial for the language?
cant go wrong with a language called ;basic;.

:)

I do a lot of scripting using Visual Basic Scripting (or VBScript) for short. Once you get comfortable, you can start incorporating VBScript programs into web programming via HTA (Hypertext Applications) or as ASP on Microsoft servers.

If you are a bit brave, Microsoft also has (a brand new language) PowerShell, which is closely related to VBScript, but has some of the more difficult processes already completed (like connecting to objects, defining data structures, etc.).

Check out my web page for samples of some of the scripts Ive written. Also look into a context editor, like Crimson Editor, to help with the basic syntax.What is the best and easy computer language to learn and where can i find tutorial for the language?
try assembler
Brother, the easiest computer language is visual basic.But i reckon you better to learn c# or c++ to improve your computer language knowledge.Because the all kind of languages are familiar with c++.But it is bit difficult to understand,but try it out. You can surf the internet and can get a tutorials,or ask anyone who knows about c++ programming.
If you want to program ;stuff;, I would go with Java - not VB. I think it will be a better basis for the future. That said, if you are truly interested in programming and computer science, I would go with Python. It has most of the constructs of Lisp while still being more human friendly. This will definitely cause you to exercise your mind in ways you never thought possible before. Lisp (and to a lesser degree Python and Scheme) is used heavily in all the ;real; hard computer science problems: Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language understanding and many more.
You might try Microsoft Visual Basic, you can download their free Visual Studio Express which includes VB. Its relatively easy to learn and powerful as well.

At the same time find yourself some good ebooks or tutorials online, VB for Dummies is a good book, it may sound lame but its a concise book that gives you good info without going into boring detail.
You should use Visual Basic 6 development tools to design softwares.Visual Basic 6 is a easy tool to create any knida software for windows platform.You should know one thing that Visual Basic 6 is not a programming language,its a rapid application development tool.You can create professional softwares by using Visual Basic 6.But i suggest its not good to use VB6 first if u wana to build ur carrer as a Programmer.It will be better if u can learn C,C++ or Java any one of this programming language.If u need to know more bout programming languages pls feel free to contact wid me.My email address: andeckh@yahoo.co.in
